Food & Wine Tour in Burgundy and the Northern Rhône

Overview
About the Region
In few places is viticulture so deeply entwined with local history, economy, and identity as in Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines inscribe the rolling hills and walled clos of the Côte d’Or like lines of poetry on the page, burrowing their roots into the ribbon of limestone that gives the Golden Slope its name. Burgundy’s vignerons express their beloved terroir with such precision that bottles of the best Bourgogne list not just their appellation but the specific vineyard parcel where the grapes are grown. These climats are so important to Burgundy’s cultural history they are designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
South of Lyon, the steep granite slopes of the Northern Rhône present a dramatic contrast to the gentle hills of Burgundy. Here, viticulture on the precipitous slopes is a bold enterprise. Syrah is the Northern Rhône’s star varietal, and its expression varies considerably across appellations depending on the vineyard’s soil composition and exposure. The region’s granite soils tend to yield strong tannins and high acid levels. As such, Northern Rhônes often benefit from some age on them, especially those from Cornas, Hermitage, and Côte-Rôtie. When ready, their dark fruit aroma with spicy, peppery, smokey notes and tannic backbone make for bold, structured wines.

What’s Included
Burgundy Climats
Burgundy’s hyper-local labeling system called climats dates to the Middle Ages when monks first started identifying the best parcels of land for planting vinifera vines. These small vineyard parcels have their own specific geological, hydrological, and climatic conditions based on their elevation, soil and drainage, and exposure in Burgundy’s hilly landscape. They are classified by the quality of their growing conditions into Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village, and Regional appellations. Each climat produces wines that express the distinct flavors and aromas of very specific parcels of land. The climats system received UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2015 in recognition of its deep importance to Burgundy’s cultural heritage.
Have a specific winemaker or village you would love to visit in the Côte de Nuits? Let us know and we can customize today’s Burgundy wine tour around your specific wish list.
